This paper looks into the reasons behind sluggish growth of regional aircraft fleet and investigates its market potentials in China. Based on analysis and forecast, we selected 3 city-pair routes in Inner Mongolia aviation market, which are low traffic flow suitable for regional operation, but now mainly operated by narrow body aircraft. By adopting operational economics analysis methodology, we calculated and compared operational economics of 2 types of regional aircraft of slightly different configurations along with A320-200 and Boeing 737-700. The results show that the regional aircraft with better fuel efficiency would be the best choice for these routes. At last, our results suggest that routes market with low traffic flow routes would be the future market opportunity for regional aircraft.
